Olathe has grown into one of the biggest job centers in Johnson County. The Olathe Chamber's economic development council lists Garmin, Farmers Insurance, Olathe Medical Center, Johnson County Government and Olathe Public Schools among employers with more than 2,000 people each, and TransAm Trucking in the 1,000 to 1,999 range. Around those anchors sit hundreds of smaller firms: suppliers, contractors, dental and medical offices, freight companies, and retail and service shops. Most of the employers who call us fall in that second group.
We are Group Health Kansas, an independent broker. We quote group plans for Olathe businesses with 2 to 50 employees, and for larger groups too, then stay on as your contact for claims questions and renewals.
Only two carriers file Olathe small group plans
Here is the part that surprises many Olathe owners. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas covers 103 of the state's 105 counties, but Johnson County is one of the two it leaves out. The Blue plan for Olathe is Blue KC, the Kansas City Blue plan, which files Kansas small group rates for rating area 1 only.
That leaves two carriers with 2026 Kansas small group filings that reach an Olathe address:
- Blue KC. Its 2026 filing lists PPO and EPO plans across bronze, silver and gold levels, and two of its products bundle pediatric dental.
- UnitedHealthcare. It files in all seven Kansas rating areas, mostly with point of service (POS) designs, plus some EPO plans.
BCBS of Kansas does file a factor for rating area 1, but that factor applies to Leavenworth and Miami counties, which sit in the same area and fall inside its service territory. Medical Associates Health Plan, the newest carrier in the state, filed only for areas 5 and 6. Our rating area 1 page shows the filed factors side by side.
With two carriers, a quote comparison is short. That makes plan design and network fit matter more than carrier count, since you cannot rely on a long list of competitors to bail you out of a weak option.
Your crew may live in Missouri
Olathe sits only a few miles from the Missouri line, so plenty of local offices have staff who live on the Missouri side and already see doctors there. A plan priced for your Olathe address still has to work for those people.
Blue KC describes its own service area as 32 counties covering greater Kansas City and northwest Missouri, two of them in Kansas. That footprint is one reason Kansas City area employers ask about it. A service area is not the same as a network, though, and networks differ from plan to plan within a single carrier. Before you pick, we pull each plan's directory and check the doctors, clinics and hospitals your employees name, whether they sit in Olathe or across State Line Road.
On the Kansas side, Olathe Medical Center on West 151st Street is where many local families go. We confirm whether each plan on your quote lists it in network. We never assume.
If your company also has a location in Missouri, our Kansas and Missouri group coverage guide covers how a two state employer is quoted.
Distribution, trucking and the 50 employee line
Olathe's employer list leans hard on logistics and distribution. The chamber's list includes TransAm Trucking, two FedEx distribution facilities, Sysco Food Services of Kansas City and TVH Parts. Smaller freight and warehouse firms feed that system, and their headcounts swing.
Two different 50 employee tests come up for these businesses, and they are easy to mix up:
- Small group versus large group. In Kansas, small group coverage is written for employers with 2 to 50 employees. Past that size you move into large group coverage, which is priced on different rules.
- The ACA employer mandate. The IRS treats an employer with at least 50 full time employees, counting full time equivalents, as an applicable large employer. A seasonal exception applies when the headcount goes over 50 for 120 days or fewer in the year and the extra workers are seasonal.
A warehouse that staffs up for the holidays might cross one line and not the other. We look at your payroll history before quoting so the plan you buy matches the category you actually fall into.
One more payroll detail. Federal rules cap the waiting period before a new hire's coverage starts at 90 days. Freight and warehouse firms with high turnover often set a waiting period near that limit, so coverage goes to people who stay. Office employers competing for staff tend to start coverage on the first of the month after hire.
Plan designs Olathe employers weigh
The two carriers here build plans differently, which shapes the quote you see.
- PPO. Blue KC files most of its small group plans as PPOs. Employees can see out of network providers at a higher cost and do not need referrals.
- EPO. Both carriers file EPO plans. These cover in network care only, apart from emergencies, and usually cost less than a comparable PPO.
- POS. Most of UnitedHealthcare's Kansas filing is POS. Some POS designs ask employees to pick a main doctor and get referrals.
- HSA qualified plans. A high deductible plan paired with a health savings account can suit a younger office staff that rarely files claims.
Our plan types guide walks through each design. For an Olathe team split between Kansas and Missouri residents, the network question usually settles the design question.
Renewal season in Johnson County
Group plans renew once a year, and the rate change sits with the carrier. CMS rate review data for 2027 shows Blue KC requesting a 13.39% average increase on its Kansas small group plans and UnitedHealthcare requesting 11.47%. Those are filed requests, not final rates, and your own renewal can land above or below the average because of your group's ages and plan.
A thin market changes how you should plan for renewal. With only two carriers to compare, there is less room to shop your way out of a bad increase at the last minute. We ask Olathe clients to send renewal notices as soon as they land, usually a couple of months before the plan year ends. That leaves time to price a plan change, a contribution change or a carrier switch, and to give employees notice.
When your renewal arrives, we compare it against the other carrier and against other plans from the same carrier. Sometimes a plan change inside Blue KC or UnitedHealthcare saves more than switching carriers. Our Kansas rate tracker follows each filing as CMS posts it.
Quoting an Olathe group
Here is how it works.
- Send us a census: each employee's age, home ZIP code and whether they want coverage for a spouse or children. Home ZIP codes matter here because of the Missouri commuters.
- Tell us which doctors or hospitals your people care about most.
- We quote Blue KC and UnitedHealthcare plans and flag network gaps for each one.
- You set the contribution and pick the plan. We handle enrollment and the start date.
Neighbors in Lenexa, Shawnee and Overland Park shop the same two carriers. To start, request a quote or call 913-336-5041, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.
