Hutchinson employers have more to compare this year than most of Kansas. Reno County sits in rating area 6, south central Kansas, and for 2026 it is one of only two Kansas areas where the new carrier, Medical Associates Health Plan, filed small group plans. That brings the count here to three. That is good news for price. It also means more fine print to read.
Group Health Kansas works as an independent broker, so we can line up all three carriers for Hutchinson businesses, point out where their networks differ, and handle enrollment once you choose.
Three carriers for Reno County
Here is who filed Kansas small group plans for rating area 6 in 2026:
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. The Topeka based Blue plan for every Kansas county except Johnson and Wyandotte, with BlueCare PPO and EPO plans.
- UnitedHealthcare. Mostly POS plans plus some EPO plans, filed in every Kansas area.
- Medical Associates Health Plan. New for 2026 and filed for areas 5 and 6 only. Its 16 plans run under the Central Plains Physicians Health Plan name, 14 of them HMO and 2 POS, from bronze through platinum.
Because Medical Associates was new, its filing showed no Kansas small group members at the time it was submitted. That is not a mark against it. It does mean you will not find years of local employer experience with these plans yet, so we read the plan documents closely with you.
How an HMO plan changes the choice
Most Hutchinson employers have spent years on PPO or POS plans. An HMO works differently, and the differences matter more than the premium:
- Network only. Outside of emergencies, an HMO covers care from network providers. Seeing a doctor outside the network usually means paying the full bill.
- A main doctor. Many HMO designs ask each member to choose a main care doctor who coordinates care.
- Referrals. Specialist visits may need a referral from that doctor.
For a team whose doctors are all in the HMO network, those rules may cost nothing and save premium. For a team split across providers, they can be a headache. Our plan types guide explains HMO, PPO, EPO and POS designs side by side.
Checking Hutchinson providers
Reno County has its own health care base. Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is the local hospital, and the Hutchinson Clinic, PrairieStar Health Center and other practices see many local families. Some employees also go to Wichita for specialists.
We do not claim any of them is in or out of a given network. For each plan on your quote, we look up the hospital, clinics and doctors your employees name and mark the result. With three carriers and several network types, this step often decides the plan more than the price does.
Bronze through platinum
All three carriers in area 6 filed plans at more than one metal level, and Medical Associates filed at all four. HealthCare.gov explains the metal levels as an estimated split of covered costs: the plan pays about 60% on bronze, 70% on silver, 80% on gold and 90% on platinum. Actual costs vary by plan.
A platinum HMO and a gold PPO can land at similar premiums, which makes for a real decision. One gives lower costs at the doctor with a tighter network. The other gives a wider choice of providers with more cost sharing. We put those two side by side when they show up on your quote, so you can weigh what your team cares about more.
Reno County employers and shift work
The Greater Wichita Partnership's Reno County profile lists manufacturers such as Collins Bus, Siemens Gamesa, Lowen Corporation, Kuhn Krause and Mega Manufacturing, along with Dillons, Kroger Accounting Services, the Hutchinson Clinic, Hutchinson Regional Healthcare, Hutchinson Community College and USD 308. The Kansas Department of Commerce adds the Hutchinson Correctional Facility and the Kansas State Fair.
That is a mix of plant floors, retail, public sector and health care. Smaller Hutchinson businesses often supply or serve those employers, and many run shifts or hire seasonally. Seasonal hires are often outside the eligible class for the plan if they work limited hours. If your payroll swells around fair season or a production push, we check how that affects ACA large employer status before quoting.
Commuting between Hutchinson and Wichita
Hutchinson and Wichita are close enough that many households have one worker in each city. Reno and Sedgwick counties are both in rating area 6, so a Hutchinson employer and a Wichita employer shop the same set of carriers.
The network question still deserves attention. An employee who lives in Hutchinson but has a Wichita cardiologist, or one who commutes up from Wichita, needs a plan that covers care in both places. We check providers in both cities when your census shows that split. Our Wichita page covers employers on the Sedgwick County side.
Questions to ask before choosing the new carrier
Medical Associates may price well for your group. Before you move your team to a carrier with no local small group track record, it pays to ask a few things:
- Are the doctors your employees see today listed in its network, and are they taking new patients?
- Does the plan require a main care doctor and referrals, and how are referrals requested?
- Which hospitals does the network use for inpatient and emergency care in Reno County and in Wichita?
- How do employees reach member services with a claim question?
We gather those answers with you and compare them against what BCBS of Kansas and UnitedHealthcare offer. If you would rather stay with your current carrier, the new option still gives you a fresh price point to hold your renewal against.
Pricing in area 6
Each carrier files an area factor that adjusts its statewide base rate for each region. In the 2026 filings, both BCBS of Kansas and UnitedHealthcare filed lower factors for area 6 than for most other Kansas areas. Factors are multipliers against each carrier's own base, so they cannot be compared across carriers, and they are not premiums. Your actual quote depends on your employees' ages and the plan you pick. See the area 6 data page for the filed numbers.
For 2027, CMS rate review data shows BCBS of Kansas requesting a 9.61% average increase on Kansas small group plans and UnitedHealthcare requesting 11.47%. Those are filed requests, not final rates. Our rate tracker follows them.
