Lenexa is a city that people commute into. The city says nearly 60,000 people live there, and its office parks, labs and warehouses draw commuters from across the metro. More jobs than residents means a large share of the people working at a Lenexa company come home each night to somewhere else: Olathe, Shawnee, Overland Park, or a Missouri suburb.
That matters for health coverage. The plan you buy has to work for an employee in Eudora and one in Raytown at the same time. Group Health Kansas is an independent broker that shops group coverage for Lenexa employers, small and large, and checks that fit before you sign.
Labs, engineers and loading docks
The city's 2022 report lists its ten largest employers. The list is led by large operations such as Quest Diagnostics, Kiewit Power Engineers and Thermo Fisher Scientific. CommunityAmerica Credit Union, Heartland Coca-Cola, the JC Penney Logistics Center, UPS, GEICO, Bread Financial and ICON round out the list.
That mix tells you who works here. Lab techs and clinical research staff. Engineers and project managers. Customer service teams. Warehouse and route crews along the I-435 and K-10 corridors. The small firms that call us often serve those same industries: testing labs, engineering subcontractors, equipment suppliers and logistics vendors.
Each group wants something different from a plan. A ten person engineering firm with salaried staff in their 30s may value a high deductible plan with a health savings account. A distribution company paying hourly wages usually needs lower deductibles, or the coverage goes unused. We start every quote by asking who is on your payroll.
Where your address puts you, and where your people live
Federal rules set your small group rating area by the group's principal business address, as registered with the state. For a Lenexa company, that address puts you in Kansas rating area 1, the Kansas City metro, along with Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Miami counties.
Your employees' home addresses do not change your rating area. They do change whether a plan works. Two things we check for every Lenexa census:
- Missouri residents. If some of your staff live and see doctors in Missouri, we check those doctors against each plan's directory.
- Kansas residents outside Johnson County. Employees in Lawrence or Eudora may use providers outside the Kansas City metro. We check them too.
We do not promise that any hospital or clinic is in network. We look it up for each plan on your quote, because two plans from one carrier can use different networks.
Two carriers, many plan choices
Johnson County sits outside the service area of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. In 2026, two carriers filed Kansas small group plans that a Lenexa business can buy:
- Blue KC, which filed 24 offered plans for rating area 1, a mix of PPO and EPO designs at bronze, silver and gold.
- UnitedHealthcare, which filed 68 offered plans statewide, mostly POS with some EPO, and more gold plans than any other metal level.
Two carriers sounds thin. The real choice is wider than it looks, since each carrier offers dozens of combinations of deductible, copay and network. The work is narrowing those to the three or four that fit your team. Our carrier overview compares the 2026 filings.
Contribution choices for a mixed workforce
When a company has both salaried professionals and hourly crews, the contribution setting often matters more than the plan. A few approaches Lenexa employers use:
- Fixed percentage of employee premium. Simple to explain. Older employees pay more in dollars, since premiums rise with age.
- Base plan contribution. You pay a set amount tied to a lower cost plan, and employees who want a richer plan pay the difference.
- Separate classes. Some carriers allow different contribution levels for clearly defined classes, such as full time and part time. We confirm what each carrier accepts.
If a fully insured plan does not fit, see our guides to level funded plans and to ICHRA and QSEHRA, where the employer reimburses individual coverage instead of buying a group policy.
When people leave
Research and contract firms see staff come and go as projects start and end. When someone leaves, their group coverage does not simply vanish without options.
- 20 or more employees. The Department of Labor says federal COBRA generally applies to group health plans of employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year. Departing staff can keep the group plan for a limited time, usually at their own cost.
- Fewer than 20 employees. Kansas law, K.S.A. 40-2209, gives employees of smaller groups a state continuation right of up to 18 months on the group policy, as long as they were covered for at least three months before it ended.
The carrier handles much of this, but the employer has notice duties. We walk you through what applies to your group size when you sign up, and our Kansas continuation coverage guide covers the details.
When a Lenexa firm crosses 50
Engineering and research firms in Lenexa tend to grow in steps, adding staff as contracts land. Once you pass 50 employees you leave the small group market and move into large group coverage. Large group pricing looks more at your own claims history and less at the standard small group rating rules.
Growth also changes your duties under the ACA. The IRS treats an employer with at least 50 full time employees, counting full time equivalents, as an applicable large employer, and those employers face reporting rules and possible penalties if they do not offer affordable coverage. Small group size and ACA size are counted differently, so we check both.
We like to know a year ahead if growth is coming. That gives time to gather the claims data a large group carrier will ask for, so the first large group renewal is not a surprise.
What to send us
Here is how it works. Email or call with:
- A list of employees with age, home ZIP code and coverage tier (employee only, spouse, children, family).
- Your current plan summary and renewal notice, if you have one.
- Doctors, clinics or hospitals your staff do not want to lose.
- How much you want to spend per employee per month.
We return a side by side comparison of Blue KC and UnitedHealthcare plans with network notes. Our cost guide explains what moves the numbers. For nearby cities, see Olathe, Shawnee and Kansas City, Kansas.
Most Lenexa quotes come back within a few business days once we have the census. To get started, send us your details online or call 913-336-5041 on weekdays between 9am and 6pm.
